Song of the Day: The Black Angels – Doves

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is Doves by The Black Angels from the forthcoming album Directions To See A Ghost on Light In The Attic.

The Black Angels – Doves (MP3)

Before coming together on the darker side of psychedelia, the members of The Black Angels came up via cult compound, mortuary, and preacher family, to name a few. Most recently, their latest album was recorded in a house two band members claim was haunted. It appears the atmosphere of their everyday lives easily translates to moody atmospherics in the studio. Having taken their name and insignia from the Velvet Underground, TBAs attempt to create a totally modern and visceral experience with their inspirations always close at hand. Clocking in at over 70 minutes, their second full length shows the band exploring the depths of its sonic layering capabilities and dynamic drones, all in preparation for a massive and overdue headlining tour. Though the album doesn’t officially hit stores until 5/13, fans can pick up a digital copy now by visiting select record stores and online retailers. Pre-ordering also gets you the physical copy upon its release and an EP of bonus tracks. Not bad, eh? Check ‘em out 6/11 @ Neumos with the Warlocks as part of the Noise For the Needy benefit. If your interest isn’t yet piqued, here’s a live performance of Prodigal Son:

Why are they called Black Angels when none of them are African American?

Merky, I believe they took their name from the Velvet Underground song “Black Angel’s Death Song”.

This album is so fantastic… I’ve been listening to it pretty much nonstop for a month. I’m giving away a couple of copies of the CD plus the bonus EP on my blog, so if you’re too poor to buy it, you can always try to win it. Details here.
