Stealth News for Cubicles

Flight of the Conchords

  • The Flight Of The Conchords album debuted at #3 on the US Billboard charts this week. The previous record for a debut by a New Zealand artist was held by Crowded House, whom — apparently unaware they should have lined up a tv sitcom before releasing a record — only made it up to #12 back in 1986. If Kiwipalooza ever gets off the ground, I’d wager Neil Finn could do a smokin’ cover of “Business Time” during the MegaKiwiJam grand finale segment.

  • Trent Reznor is really getting a head of steam up as he cuts the middleman out of everything from album distribution to concert ticket sales. Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails have put aside blocks of tickets for each show of the upcoming tour, earmarked for registered patrons. Tickets will be printed with the purchaser’s name, and a valid picture ID matching the ticket will be required for to pick the ducats up at the show (somewhere, hundreds of “ticket brokers” are putting a new face on their dartboards…) The band hits Seattle at Key Arena on July 26, with opener Crystal Castles.

  • 4AD is taking on artists currently signed to subsidiaries Too Pure and Beggars Banquet; those two imprints will be no longer. “Restructuring” at Beggars Group (which also includes the labels XL Recordings, Mo’Wax, and more) means the Too Pure and Beggars Banquet rosters will fold into 4AD. “Whether they’ll be (as) equally resourced,” huffs the Guardian, “seems to be in doubt.” Hey, it could be worse — that Seagrams dude could buy you.
