Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today‚Äôs featured selection, chosen in anticipation of Memorial Day weekend’s Sasquatch Festival, is More Bad Times by The Presidents of the United States of America from the 2008 album These Are Good Times People on Fugitive Recordings.

The Presidents of the United States of America – More Bad Times (MP3)

Through the success of Lump and Peaches to the reworking of Cleveland Rocks, which became the Drew Carey Show theme song, to running their own record label, this Seattle trio has always managed to maintain relevancy. They came in at the tail end of grunge with happy-go-lucky punk pop, and their simple song structures and hilarious hooks grabbed the attention of fans around the world for years to come. These Are The Good Times People marks the band’s 6th studio album and their first without cofounder Dave Dederer. Dederer’s guitbass playing has been taken on by another Seattle-ite, Andrew McKeag. The Fastbacks’ Kurt Block stepped in to produce and the resulting sound spans genres more than any other disc in the PUSA catalog. Across 14 tracks (16 on Itunes) the band bridges funk, swing, punk and power pop, all peppered with the now more mature silliness of frontman Chris Ballew. Whether or not you fell off during the band’s breakup years, now is a good time to be on the PUSA bandwagon. Check them out later this month when they appear at the Sasquatch! Music Festival. In the meantime, tag along on the band’s tour of the Midwest and East Coast via their tour blog, and most importantly, decide which PUSA member you’d elect as President of the Presidents of the United States:

Chris Ballew for President

Jason Finn for President

Andrew McKeag for President
