KEXP Podcast: DJ Rachel presents It’s-Almost-Summer-So-Sit-Tight Mixtape!

Man Party: enjoying the summer sun

by DJ Rachel

It’s about sunscreen time! Words cannot express how excited I am that it is finally getting warm here in Seattle. But my blisters can. You know how it is: the sun comes out, and you decide, “Socks!? Who needs ‘em?” Then you wear your favorite shoes barefoot and you realize that you actually depend on socks to prevent blisters. Now my feet hurt. Wah. But... I’m excited to bring you my Music that Matters, Vol. 98 – It’s-Almost-Summer-So-Sit-Tight Mixtape! Chocked full of my favorite tracks right now, many of the rarities and demos.

Here’s just a wee sampling of what you’ll find!

Thomas Function - Snake on the Grass:

Thomas Function is an amazing band out of Alabama! Their self titled debut release on Alive Records, is one of my favorites so far this year! Fun, poppy, garage-y goodness, all the way.

Man Party - Dance Monkey:

Well, first off, this local band’s name is Man Party! What a great name!! And then, to go and call a song Dance Monkey -- well, there’s no doubt it’s gonna be rad. And it is. Get yer dance on.

Catatonic Youth - I’ve Had It:

Catatonic Youth keep the party going with catchy loud and noisy beats. There’s a veil of mystery around this band. With nothing but a few 7” to show for themselves, and only playing a handful of shows -- how can they be so awesome. Are they even a they? There could just be one person. Perhaps they’re aliens. Who cares.

The Dutchess and the Duke - Reservoir Park (7″ version)

This is the first single from this local band and punk supergroup (featuring members of Unnatrual Helpers, Intelligence Fall Outs, Fe Fi Fo Fums, Coconut Coolouts and more). Interestingly, with that kind of punk rock lineage, their musical style is much more Rolling Stones than Black Flag. They recently signed to Sub Pop Records subsidiary, Hardly Art. I’m highly anticipating the release of their first full length later this year.

Liars - Army of Me (courtesy of Stereogum)

The Liars have spanned genres from experimental to noise to art punk. Who better for them to cover than the genre-defying Bjork! Stereogum.com put together an amazing compilation of great bands covering all the songs on Bjork’s seminal album, Post. You can listen to this song, as well as download the entire album at stereogum.com!
