I gotta tell you that Membership Drives are INTENSE.
Today, a guy came into the station and dropped of a manilla envelope that was 1/3rd full of change, topped with two match books. He told someone that he’d saved the change for six months. I never got to meet him. I didn’t get a chance to thank him. I don’t even know his name. The times when someone makes a gift of their change are incredibly moving and meaningful to me. We counted his gift: $52.21.
Gosh, that’s putting daily thought into action. It’s resolution and it’s passion. It’s awe-inspiring and humbling. KEXP is really important in my life -- has been for a long, long time. I love this station, and the music and talented DJs who curate really smart sets of music for me everyday. So does my unknown friend who came into the station today. His gift must have so much meaning behind it, but I can’t even pretend that I might know what it might be.
All I know is that he must have thought about what the station means to him, thought about how he could support the station, and then he decided to act on his convictions and bring his gift into the station, himself. I really, really wish I could have thanked him. I’d have loved to give him a hug.
I’m happy to have so many thoughtful people participate in the KEXP community. We create it together. We’re doing something pretty cool here... we’re making a non-profit bastion in the midst of a commercial industry that forgot that art is at the root of what we do. Thanks to you and me and our friends, we’re reclaiming music from those who think of music not as something that feeds our spirit, but as a product. It’s a very important thing that we’re doing. Be loud and be proud this week, as we celebrate artists and music.
