Song of the Day: Eef Barzelay – Lose Big

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is Lose Big by Eef Barzelay from the 2008 album Lose Big on 429 Records.

Eef Barzelay – Lose Big (MP3)

If you want your child to be remembered, name them Eef. This Eef, to ensure he’s remembered for something good, honed his songwriting craft and put it to use for popular alt-country soul slingers, Clem Snide. But over the last couple years Eef has dedicated himself to his own solo material and film soundtracks. Lose Big marks Barzelay’s 2nd solo album, following 2006s Bitter Honey. After one listen to Eef’s solo work, listeners will recognize his fingerprints all over the Clem Snide catalog. Comparatively, Eef conjures a much more subdued and even more soulful pop, positioning himself perfectly for the indie soundtrack market. He more than proved his worth on last year’s Rocket Science, even resurrecting the beautiful Clem Snide tune, I Love the Unknown. His latest contribution to the film industry is the soundtrack to this year’s Yellow Handkerchief. Now that we’re all tuned in to the wonderful combination that music and film provide following the recent SIFF Festival, I expect you all to rush out and see this one. Also, be sure to check out the artist’s MySpace page as he’s currently making the rounds through the US. The following video goes back to the Rocket Science soundtrack and that fabulous rendition of I Love the Unknown:
