Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Every Friday the Song of the Day podcast spotlights local musicians. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is “Me + Yr Daughter” by Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head on their upcoming debut release Glistening Pleasure from Team Swan.
I actually had the pleasure of seeing one this band’s first public performances at a benefit for 826 Seattle. I remember standing in the back with the staff who knew Claire from her work there, and we were all blown away by the level of talent and creativity from this group. Now NPSH are veterans of Seattle’s premier festivals, including Bumbershoot and the Capitol Hill Block Party, and they have a new full length on the way. There’s a lot of blog buzz about this band from the Secret Crush EP, to their self-created costumes, dynamic stage presence, and of course the excitement over LA music types coming to see them play here in Seattle. They’re not just an over-hyped group of kids, though. They truly do have their fingers on the pulse of what’s cool (or kitschy?) about 80’s influenced synth pop. Check them out for yourself when their debut album Glistening Pleasure hits shelves July 15th or shortly after that at the Capitol Hill Block Party. Their MySpace page has a bunch more dates if you’re not in the Seattle area as they continue touring with CSS. It’s not the greatest quality, but check out their performance of “Mouth Full of Bones” at the EMP Soundoff! finals (just try to ignore the screaming teens):
