Three Imaginary Girls: A smattering of recommendations as summer finally heats up

Nothing is happening this week.

OK, there are some things going on over the next seven days. There has to be, right? People are going to be getting from point A to B by bicycle this weekend in various degrees of dress — caveat emptor on that one, friends. Like dreary weather in Seattle, there will, of course, be some great live music as well.

I do really enjoy Mono in VCF — my favorite Tacoma band without a swear word in their name — who are playing at Neumo’s on Saturday night. They take the best elements from Pink Floyd (epic psychedelic rock) and leave behind the worst (litter at Coachella). And Dyme Def is one of the most promising local hip hop crews and they’re celebrating the release of their “3 Bad Brothaaas” mixtape at Nectar on Sunday night. That certainly promises to be one helluva party. Plus, the RZA (from the Wu Tang Clan) will be here on Tuesday at the Showbox at the Market and there’s that free Head Like a Kite show on Thursday at Neumo’s with Smoosh, to commemorate HLAK’s latest offering.

All of which are excellent options, of course, but this week also has our very own bash.

Exile in {Imaginary} Girlville at Chop Suey, Wednesday, June 25
Even if I wasn’t affiliated with TIG, I would still be incredibly excited for this show. It’s our 6th anniversary party and we’re playing Liz Phair’s brilliant and timeless debut album, Exile in Guyville with 9 of our favorite northwest bands: Throw Me the Statue, the Tea Cozies, Lucy Bland, Tennis Pro, Star Anna, M. Bison, Team Gina, plus special performances by Rachel Flotard of Visqueen and Lesli Wood of Ms. Led.

Each band will play two songs and we’ll play the entire album from beginning to end, from “6’1″” to “Strange Loop”. Did I also mention that proceeds benefit Planned Parenthood of Western Washington? Or that David Schmader, of The Stranger, is co-hosting? (Hence the “nothing is happening this week” reference at the beginning of this post.) Or that tickets are only $8? Or…

Are we there yet?

Memorizing all the stupid rules…

See you out and about,
Chris Burlingame
