SP20 Band of the Day: The Vaselines + ticket giveaway!

review by Chris Estey

On air this week, you’ll hear the DJ’s featuring bands on the Sub Pop label and especially those performing during this weekend’s 20th Anniversary Festival at Marymoor Park from noon to 10pm on July 12th and 13th. On the KEXP Blog, we’ll be featuring one or two bands each day and giving away tickets to SP20! Today, we’re featuring The Vaselines.

The Vaselines were joyfully founded by Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee in beautiful Glasgow in the late 80s, and balanced perfect underground pop songs with ebullient chaotic charm, sparking off an international aesthetic that KEXP endorses daily. The big bang for the underrated work of bands Eugenius and Captain America in the 90s, The Vaselines could arguably have disappeared in the layered mist of love and laughter rock icons past if record and zine obsessive Kurt Cobain hadn’t been dazzled by timeless gems like “Molly’s Lips” and “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For A Sunbeam” (which you may have heard the man covering himself with his band brilliantly on MTV Unplugged). The Vaselines’ astonishing-to-even-consider scheduled appearance at the upcoming Sub Pop Festival might be one of the very eagerly awaited thrills for those-in-the-know, but if you’re a neophyte who is leery of a group with only a greatest hits available here (nineteen dynamite tracks on Sub Pop, of course) and not much else back catalogue when investigated further, then you are probably unaware of how spontaneous and tricky pop mavericks can be. Don’t miss them; they will sound eerily familiar to dozens of bands you adore (many from Seattle), and yet all that and more.

The Vaselines – Dying For It (MP3)

KEXP and Zune are giving you an opportunity to attend SubPop 20. All you have to do is be one of the first people to answer a trivia question and put “SP20″ in the subject line, and be sure to specify which day you want to go, either “Saturday” or “Sunday”. The first 4 people to respond (2 for each day) will get one ticket for the day they choose. The ticket must be picked up at the station by Friday. All this week, we’ll be giving away tickets to SP20 on the KEXP Blog, so stay tuned! Here’s your question:

When was The Vaselines’ last live performance in the U.S.?

If you think you know the answer, email now!
Sorry, tickets for today are all gone. (Yes, it’s true — the Vaselines have never played in the U.S. before!)

Saturday at SP20 is sold out, but you can still get tickets for Sunday if you check now! Also, we’re still giving away tickets to the Comedy Show on Friday. It’s a tough question and only one person got it so far, but there four more pairs(!) available.
