On air this week, you’ll hear the DJ’s featuring bands on the Sub Pop label and especially those performing during this weekend’s 20th Anniversary Festival at Marymoor Park from noon to 10pm on July 12th and 13th. On the KEXP Blog, we’ll be featuring one or two bands each day and giving away tickets to SP20! Today, we’re featuring Eric’s Trip.
review by Eric Mahollitz
Before becoming Sub Pop‘s first Canadian band in the early ’90s, the members of Eric’s Trip released an array of cassettes and EPs, amassing quite the collection before their label signing. Taking their name from a Sonic Youth song of the same name (from Daydream Nation), this New Brunswick band thrives on boy/girl vocals and a perfect tug & pull relationship between droning noise rock and sad lo-fi pop. Within the repertoire of Eric’s Trip exists everything necessary to remain credible through every year from their formation to the present. Following the high output of their pre-Sub Pop days, they would eventually put out 3 studio records for the label between ’93 and ’96, the year of their initial breakup. In addition to reunions throughout the years and the release of several live albums, band members have been involved with projects such as Elevator, Broken Girl, Moon Socket, Shotgun & Jaybird, and The Memories Attack, and you might recognize the name of Julie Doiron, the former bass player of the band who has maintained a successful solo career to this day. Those in attendance for this weekend’s performance will see the same lineup the band has maintained since the Winter of ’91, and even if you’ve never heard the band before, history like this has a way of inciting awe.
KEXP and Zune are giving you an opportunity to attend SubPop 20. All you have to do is be one of the first people to answer a trivia question and put “SP20″ in the subject line, and be sure to specify which day you want to go, either
Sunday. The first 4 people to respond (2 for each day) will get a pair of tickets for that day. The ticket must be picked up at the station by Friday. There’s one more day left of giving away tickets to SP20 on the KEXP Blog, so stay tuned! Here’s your question:
If you think you know the answer, email now!
Sorry, tickets for today are all gone.
Saturday at SP20 is sold out, but you can still get tickets for Sunday if you check now! Also, we’re still giving away tickets to the Comedy Show on Friday. It’s a tough question and only a few people got it so far, but there is still one more pair available!
