SP20: Happy Birthday, Sub Pop!

Sub Pop will host their 20th Anniversary Music Festival this weekend in beautiful Marymoor Park, the “Crown Jewel” of the King County Parks system. That’s good to know considering that’s where we plan on spending most of our weekend. The otherwise tranquil setting will be transformed into an over-the-top, foaming at the mouth, musical orgy called the SP20 Festival. Sub Pop is rolling out the whole gang for this one. If you didn’t plan ahead, we’re not sure what to tell you; by now, the weekend is close to being completely sold out! Tickets are already gone for Saturday, but there are still tickets left for Sunday. Try here first for tickets.

You can just feel the hype building and see the hipster elite converging for this one. You can hardly blame them. With all the history and all the great band that have played here, it’s hard to think about Seattle without Sub Pop. They’ve had a huge impact on our local music scene, and influenced scores of new Artists along the way. They may have had some rocky beginnings, but Sub Pop is at the top of their game right now, and if you haven’t heard the new crop of Sub Pop bands, you are in for a treat. With all these great bands on the bill, this weekend could prove to be epic -- what we refer to in the industry as “the perfect storm.” We’re really starting to get excited for this. If you have a hard time believing the hype, next time you look up at the Space Needle: it should be rockin’ a Sub Pop flag and painted to look like a record. Just the kind of thing you’d expect from the city rated #2 in the World’s Best Cities and Festivals for Music Lovers.

Leading up to the weekend, we at KEXP has been doing our best to bring you as much Sub Pop as we can possibly muster. Not only have our DJ’s be getting into the act, but we’ve been featuring in-studio performances (Les Thugs today at noon and Constantines tomorrow), ticket giveaways (on air and on the Blog), and plenty of info about the bands.

And this weekend, there will be bands. Lots of bands. Look at this unbelievable SP20 music line-up:

Sub Pop just updated their site: Obits and The Constantines are the first two bands on Saturday.
