On air this week, you’ve been hearing the DJ’s feature bands from Sub Pop, especially from those performing during this weekend’s 20th Anniversary Festival at Marymoor Park from noon to 10pm on July 12 and 13th. On the KEXP Blog, we’ve also been featuring a band each day and giving away tickets to SP20. Now that the weekend is finally upon us, this may be your last chance to win tickets! Today, we’re featuring Foals.
Self-described as “snotty art school dropouts hungry for the dollar”, these Oxford U.K. boys are one of the coolest new bands on the Sub Pop roster. I love British Bands who don’t take themselves so seriously, and despite the lofty Oxford expectations of becoming the next Radiohead, Foals definitely look like they’re having a hell of a good time. In other words, you probably don’t want them crashing at your pad for the weekend. Their debut album Antidotes received mixed reviews here in the U.S., but it’s been on steady rotation for many of us here in the Pacific Northwest since its release. I love the unpredictability of the beats and the uniqueness of their delivery, but I’m also a sucker for dancey U.K. electropop. You can decide for yourself if the hype is deserved, but we’ve heard great things about the energy of their live shows. What do they sound like? Put New Order, Block Party, The Kooks, Klaxons, and Field Music in a blender and you start to get an idea, but the Foals definitely march to their own beat. SP20 is the beginning of an exhaustive schedule that takes them all the way into November.
