Out This Week 8/12

Mike Watt has plenty to feel sorry about right now — what, with his beloved ’63 Gibson EB-3 “little bass” lost among the Stooges gear ripped off in Montreal last week — but the sheer chutzpah of the debut release from LA band The Widow Babies, named The Mike Watt EP, ought to at least inspire a smile. According to the band’s label, Sounds Are Active, the EP “features a brilliantly conceived story that pits Minutemen bassist and erstwhile folkhero Mike Watt against a world domination-minded vampire who looks like Abraham Lincoln.” Pinball wizard, my eye — now, that’s a concept!

While picking up The Mike Watt EP, you should also check out a few other new releases, found on Largehearted Boy’s list, including the latest from Dub-Step pioneer The Bug, fuzzed out Leeds rockers The Manhattan Love Suicides, and Portland band The Upsidedown, who have performed with The Dandy Warhols, Foals, and The Jesus & Mary Chain (do you really need any more proof of cred?). Give a listen and get out there!

The DeLeon album is highly underrated and spectacular – like Beirut, !!!, and Cafe Tacuba combined.
