Song of the Day: Okkervil River – Lost Coastlines

Steve Gullick

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is “Lost Coastlines” by Okkervil River on the upcoming album The Stand Ins on Jagjaguwar Records.

Okkervil River – Lost Coastlines (MP3)

Okkervil River has had a revolving cast of characters since its inception in 1995.  It’s not without reason that they chose to focus last year’s critically acclaimed album The Stage Names on finding the meaning of entertainment and meaning within the entertainers themselves.  Their forthcoming album, The Stand Ins, picks up where The Stage Names left off, exploring characters real and fictional as they deal with conflict and the hardships of touring and performing.  “Lost Coastlines” is a duet between Will Sheff and recently departed Jonathan Meiberg (Shearwater) as they expound upon the uncertainties of leaving behind the familiar, the people and places you know, for destinations unknown and even unmapped. The album itself will be available on September 9th, but if you pre-order you can get free digital downloads starting September 5th and the disc (or LP) will be mailed out with posters in time for the release date.  Check their website for more information.  Okkervil River rolls back into town on September 17th at The Showbox.  For a complete listing of tour dates check out their MySpace page.  To help celebrate the release of The Stand Ins, Okkervil River have asked some of their favorite singers/songwriters to help them perform each track on their new album.  Check out this video for “Lost Coastlines” featuring Okkervil River’s Will Sheff and A.C. Newman from The New Pornographers:
