Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is Dormida
by Natalia Clavier from the 2008 album Nectar on Eighteenth Street Lounge Music.
I imagine Natalia Clavier, born in Buenos Aires but now residing in Barcelona, has never had a problem finding a place to lend her sweet, sultry vocals. Last year Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation invited her to sing with them on tour, and she was likewise snared for vocal duties on Federico Aubele‘s latest, Panamericana. These two life altering events led to a few more. Clavier has since married Aubele and become the first female solo artist on the ESL label. On Nectar, Clavier sings in Spanish, a feat she largely avoided ’til now. To accompany her nearly unmatchable vocals is a dizzying array of influences from trip-hop and Latin to jazz and electronica. Hilton controlled the dials on the record, giving Nectar the perfect balance of ambiance, liveliness and multicultural allure that has kept TC at the forefront for years. Here, Clavier is brimming with confidence and the promise of a big future. You can check out Clavier when she opens a great double-bill show with her husband Aubele at the Triple Door 9/16. Meanwhile, here’s another great track and the video for El Arbol
