Review Revue: The Fall – Extricate

This is a quickie, but it holds an important lesson for future KEXP reviewers: Always write your reviews on the CD artwork, not on the jewel case! The original review of this 1990 album (album sampler, actually) by perennial weirdos and KEXP faves The Fall has been lost forever because it was written on the front of the jewel case, which then “had to” be thrown away for some reason. The mind-boggling thing, however, is the thrower-away then proceeded to stick his own review on the new jewel case! Madness, I tell you! Luckily, these second generation reviews (for what their worth) haven’t been lost to posterity like the original, but still, it’s better not to tempt the fates. Jewel cases, unlike CDs and their artwork, are fleeting, temporary things, not to be trusted.

“John George, I had to throw away the CD case w/your comments on it — Sorry! I don’t know what to make of this yet — I need to listen to it more. It ain’t Kurios Oranj.”

“‘Telephone Thing’ is great!”

“The vocals are very Mark E. Smith. [What a surprise!) The music and production will probably surprise you. ‘Telephone Thing’ is way funky. Yes, funky.”

“Ooo, this is a good thing!”

There are so many Fall albums in the library there and you pick one with minimal comments. C’mon, give us one with some meat! This Nations Saving Grace, The Frenz Experiment, Bend Sinister, Perverted By Language etc etc. In the best of all possible worlds the Fall would be heard at least once a day on KEXP and twice on Sundays…. at a minimum!!!

Hey, gimme a break! Part of it’s the fact that usually the LPs are the ones with the good comments, but I have to photograph those rather than scan them, and sometimes I just don’t have the time, you know?

But yeah, I’ll come back to the Fall; don’t worry. Thanks for reading, Damon!

Hey Levi, no worries. Got me thinking, I see Jeff Greinke is playing Decibel Festival along with a host of others. With Decibel Festival just around the corner, you ought to pull the first Jeff Greinke album “Cities In Fog.” I recall it had a pretty lively debate. Surprisingly so for an ambient album.
