Happens To Us All Otherwise by Bound Stems from the 2008 album The Family Afloat on Flameshovel Records.
In 2006, this Chicago quintet did what a lot of bands dream of doing but never realize — they quit their day jobs and headed out on tour. Granted they had a small media buzz at their backs and the ride hasn’t been without its kinks, but the effort has proven more than worth their while. Vocalists Bobby Gallivan and Janie Porche whisk up huge harmonies on The Family Afloat, their second studio effort, taking the band’s wall-of-sound pop orchestrations to another level. Apparently their 2006 record, Appreciation Night, was an overtly Chicago record, both lyrically and musically; while the same heart-on-sleeve approach is dampened this time around, the liquid rhythms, tempos and time signatures of The Family Afloat create a spirited accompaniment to Chicago’s hazy summers and provide a great companion piece for the long, laborious winters. Apparently no tour dates are currently in store, but since the album just hit shelves last week, I’d be surprised if the band remained behind closed doors for long.
