Monday News Mash-Up

  • Hall of Fame drummer Earl Palmer passed away on Friday. Palmer, who recorded memorable hits with Little Richard (“Tutti Frutti”) and The Righteous Brothers (“You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin,'”) among many others, was 84 when he succumbed to a lengthy illness. Little Richard called Palmer “probably the greatest session drummer of all time.”

  • Road warrior Andrew Spencer Goldman — hot on the heels of his latest release, The Way We Ride, under the guise of Fulton Lights — is busy on tour in Europe. Along the way Goldman has been documenting the tour with pictures and field recordings, posting the goodies on his blog Sound Travels.
  • Boredoms, hot off the bi-coastal 88 Boadrum are set to release a CD+DVD set of last year’s 77 Boadrum. Unfortunately for those poor collectors, the 3-disc set is only seeing distribution in the band’s native Japan, so if you’re in need of possessing the set be prepared to pay big money.
  • Gorillaz are reportedly readying to enter the studio to record a new album. Gorillaz and Blur frontman Damon Albarn recently told Pitchfork and the CBC that the band is actively seeking artists for collaborations, putting a temporary end to a year’s worth of break-up rumors.
  • McDonald’s has teamed with Microsoft to provide free wireless internet for Zune users. More than 9,800 stores from the heavily-criticized fast food chain will implement the service, allowing the 4% of MP3 player owners that own a Zune to access the gizmo’s Marketplace as well as share mp3s with other McDonald’s eaters also armed with a Zune.
