Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s featured selection is “Collapsing at your Doorstep” by Air France from their 2008 EP No Way Down on Sincerely Yours.
Few bands can make a sonic statement the way Air France does. Considering the past successes of bands from their hometown region of Gothenburg, Sweden (Jens Lekman, José González, El Perro del Mar, etc.), you could expect a certain familiarity to their music, yet Air France have no problems producing uniquely epic dance music all their own. Finding home on The Tough Alliance‘s own Sincerely Yours, they’ve managed to produce one of the most surprising releases of 2008. “Collapsing at your Doorstep” is a stand out track that showcases some of the atmospheric keyboards, uniquely layered DJ synth samples, and dreamy shoegaze lyrics that make up their sound. With all these textures being played over a very danceable pop beat, you begin to understand the method to their madness. At 23 minutes, their No Way Down EP is a short but focused listen, and in no time you’ll be tapping your fingers and singing along. Just like a dream? No, it’s better.
Currently, there are no tour dates listed on the band’s MySpace page, but keep checking back.
