Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Every Friday the Song of the Day podcast spotlights local musicians. Today‚Äôs featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is “Mockingbird Diet” by Karl Blau on Nature’s Got Away available from K Records.

Karl Blau – Mockingbird Diet (MP3)

Karl Blau has toured the world with Laura Viers, but he is perhaps best known as a staple of the Anacortes music scene where he is a part of the Knw-Yr-Own Records/K Records collective and a former purveyor of the Kelp Records. He is also one of the founders of the What the Heck Fest, which showcases bands from K Records, Marriage Records, and of course Knw-Yr-Own among others. With his sense of humor ever present, Karl is known for creating eclectic music incorporating elements of folk, dub, R & B, bossanova, grunge, hip-hop and world beat. You can check Karl out at one of his regular haunts, the Department of Safety, in Anacortes on October 3rd or at Cairo Art Gallery on Capitol Hill in Seattle on October 18th. He is also teaching a class on home recording techniques at the Department of Safety on November 1st. Check his myspace page for more dates and information.

I don’t know why but I absolutely love the guitar feedback and sketchy sound. Sounds like I’m listening to this live in a bar nursing a drink by myself among others while he’s playing behind us. A really great song. :) Thanks.
