KEXP Fall Membership Drive: Reaching The Sublime

We’re counting down the Top 903 KEXP records of all time. There’s nothing like a radio countdown. A local station used to do “Beatles A to Z” when I was a kid. My siblings and I would try to stay up all night and record the songs off the radio on our cassette decks. Wish I still had those cassettes!

It’s no surprise, then, that I could barely get out of the house today. You see, I have the countdown list. I don’t really look ahead, but I do follow along and see the next few songs. I’ve been timing many of my daily routines around upcoming sets, so I don’t miss the transitions between the songs -- I love a good transition between songs. I’ve also planned my actions so that I’m near the radio when a good record is going to be coming up.

That’s why I was rushing to put on my coat on and get in the car this morning. But I didn’t make it. Here I was, bags slung over my shoulders, laptop under my arm, keys in hand, coat buttoned, ready to walk out the door. But, I was stopped in my tracks. Led Zeppelin -- ahhh. So good.

I turned my stereo up as loud as I dared that early in the morning, sat back on the couch, and listened to the entire song.

They say that it’s hard for people to put into words the way that the arts make them feel. They also always say that the arts are imperative to a healthy community. Something you can’t describe is important to a vibrant community.

This morning was awesome, but I can’t tell you why. Somehow I felt more connected to you. Listening to the complex rhythms in Whole Lotta Love, Robert Plant’s crazy ass voice, the pleading guitar, made me feel good. Happy, alive, more real, more in touch with something that’s bigger than me or you or the guys who recorded the song decades ago. A guy in the Seattle Times talked about “The Sublime” as it related to a specific band the other day. I think that’s what this feeling must be.

I’m just really grateful that I live in Seattle and grew up on KEXP and have always felt The Sublime, though I never knew it. Here’s to many more moments of feeling absolutely great over the next few days as we get closer to #1!

Currently, the 2008 Fall Membership Drive is full swing. Tune in to the Top 903 Countdown and be sure to pledge your support now so that KEXP will continue to thrive and offer such a unique listening experience.

Great post, Leesa! (and thanks, Victoria, for the Polaroids!)

The countdown was a genius idea! (although full disclosure, i’ve been on the edge of my seat listening for Pela the entire time - once i know where they land, i’ll be able to listen more closely & soak in these fabulous other 902 selections :-))
