Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is “Hairy Candy” by Tobacco from their 2008 release Fucked Up Friends on Anticon Records.
When he isn’t hiding behind a mask, you may know Tobacco (Tom Fec) from his outstanding work with psych-hop unit Black Moth Super Rainbow. He’s one of those real trippy psychedelic dudes from Pennsylvania and his first solo effort Fucked up Friends is already gaining critical notoriety. While there are definitely some similarities to BMSR here, Tobacco presents a more retro analog sound, and the new, almost entirely instrumental, album is darker and moodier than his previous work. Fortunately, “Hairy Candy” is a particularly snappy song that manages to mix hip-hop beats over some great 80’s sounding analog synths and heavily modulated female vocals. It’s a danceable track that takes the signature BMSR sound to an entirely new level.
While their video for “Hairy Candy” is probably NSFW (you can check it out here when you’re boss isn’t looking), this unlikely promo by TRUTH anti-smoking campaign spokesman Derrick Beckles is certianly pro-Tobacco:
