Monday News Mash-Up

  • The film industry dips its cup into the music business as Universal Pictures‘ International division prepares to tackle the life and times of Serge Gainsbourg. According to Variety, the film will be shot in France, will be written in French, and performed by French actors. Time to brush up on Paris, Bridget Bardot, and hard living.
  • Not to be outdone, UK outfit CC Films has announced the release of From Here to Before, a film about revived British folk singer Vashti Bunyan. The Kieran Evans directed documentary combines the [retraced] road trip that inspired Bunyan’s classic Just Another Diamond Day with Bunyan’s first high profile London concert.
  • There was a time when David Yow was a punk amongst kings. Now the time has come for him and the rest of the Jesus Lizard brood to reclaim their slice of glory. The Chicago luminaries of loud are reuniting for a few shows in ’09, beginning with a date at All Tomorrow’s Parties: Fans Strike Back in May.

  • Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls are continuing to stake a claim to their own piece of the male-dominated music business. The ladies have launched their own label, Wild World, which contains the group’s 7″ release “Surf’s Up!”
  • Hell may have finally frozen over — at the very least, it’s reflecting the turn of winter. Atlantic has announced that digital sales of their albums are trumping physical sales. In case that makes no sense to you, let’s put it another way: kids would rather buy individual MP3s and ringtones of varying sound quality than fork over the dough for a bulky case and disc where the sound quality is worse than vinyl and is sure to include a batch of songs they don’t like. Atlantic goes so far as to tell Rolling Stone that they “finally figured it out.” Perhaps a 39% spike in digital sales helps one see the light.
