Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters is “Nothing Ever Happened” by Deerhunter from 2008 album Microcastle on Kranky.
The first thing you notice when you listen to the new track “Nothing Ever Happened” by the innovative Deerhunter is the driving pulse of the rhythm. As vocalist Bradford Cox repeats the chorus — “nothing ever happened to me, nothing ever happened to me” — it’s difficult to believe that such apathy could inspire such boisterous noise. Those who have followed the Atlanta-based band through its relatively short but turbulent life know that Cox and co-founder Moses Archuleta are anything but apathetic. The latest album, Microcastle, is packaged with entire other album, Weird Era Cont., which was recorded soon afterward. Ever prolific, Cox has been regularly putting out demos and random other tracks by Deerhunter as well as his “solo” project Atlas Sound for free on his blog.
Live, Deerhunter is amazing to see. (Just ask Ben, our new all-ages reviewer, who wrote about their recent Seattle appearance.) Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s famously referred to their show a while back in NME as nearly “a religious experience.” Now, they’re more engaging, even while Cox, who has been known to partake in some fairly extreme creative transformations on stage, from wearing dresses to drenching himself in fake blood, has been laying low on the gimmickry and shifting focus more to the music he creates with his bandmates Archuleta, Josh Fauver, Lockett Pundt, and new guitarist Whitney Petty. If you’re living in the South, you can still catch them live tonight in Houston, and then in Louisiana or Alabama, before they break and then head off to Europe in early Spring. Check their MySpace page for more information and be sure to hit Bradford Cox’s Deerhunter blog regularly to hear new demos, one-offs, and all kinds of other great stuff, like this video for “Microcastle” created by their good friend Adam Bruneau:
