I love vinyl. Every detail of it. The cardboard sleeves it comes in. The “swish” sound as it leaves the sleeve. Art you can put your hands on. Unlike CDs, the art is big enough to appreciate. I have started decorating my apartment walls with LP Covers and naked vinyl discs. It’s finally starting to feel like home.
Some of them are black, grooved shinyness. Some have tiny cracks and scratches that are as delicious as popcorn. Some are colored and have odd shapes like apples or spaceships.
No CD will ever sound as warm as vinyl. There is no “swish” sound as the CD leaves its case. There is no delicate placement of a needle that starts the music.
Daptone Records is a label in Brooklyn New York that was built from the sale of vinyl. They specialize in funk, blues and soul. Their new Daptone Remixed collection is on my top 10 list of releases from 2008. They start with an organic soul sound like this Sharon Jones song:
Then they add dub, dance beats or rapping to the song. The label Daptone was founded by Gabriel Roth of the Dap-Kings and Neal Sugarman of the Sugarman 3. The Dap-Kings back the incredible singer Sharon Jones (and also played with Amy Winehouse, recording her “Back to Black” release at their studios). Other bands on this “keepin it real” soul label are: Lee Fields, The Budos Band and Sugarman 3.
My favorite song on this collection features Calm Cool Pete rapping and singing a song with Sharon Jones called “Stranded In Your Love”. You can hear it here.
This collection is by far one of the best releases of 2008. If you sign up for my mailing list.
I’ll send you the rest of my top 10 of 2009. I’ll also send you my top 40 single songs of the year.
Here is a tour of the Daptone Studios in Brooklyn. Sharon Jones is not only their top-selling singer, but she also works in the office and helped lay the electric lines.
