Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Every Friday the Song of the Day podcast spotlights local musicians. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show Host John Richards is a remix of “A Ghost Is A Ghost Is A Ghost by Man Plus, found on the Remixed Songbook, which contains new versions of the songs from The Hungarian Songbook (digital self-release).
The last time Man Plus was featured as a Song of the Day, they had just released their second full-length album The Hungarian Songbook to much acclaim. Since then, they were one of the featured on-air guests during KEXP’s live coverage of Ballard Day (frontman Jared Mills was all over the place, walking on CD racks at Sonic Boom and among the enthusiastic crowd), they played the Capitol Hill Block Party, and they helped Cheryl Waters rock the dance floor during the Midday Show’s first-ever Get Your Freak On Dance Party. Mills also took some time to work on a side project with a revolving cast of characters including some Man Plus folks. As Noddy (not the PBS kids show), Mills explores remixing music and performing traditional DJ sets and those influences can be seen in the Songbook remixes.
The album version of this song features high energy synths and driving drums along with Mills’ syncopated and repetitive lyrics. The remix smooths out some of the manic overtones and creates a more groove-oriented approach to the song while still retaining the elements that originally drew you to it. Though Man Plus doesn’t have any shows scheduled in the immediate future, be sure to keep your eyes and ears on their MySpace page for hints of things to come. Their website promises they are working on new material and hope to have another album out this spring. In the meantime, you can download the remix EP for FREE to get your Man Plus fix and check out this video for “My Kind of People”:
