1. BOAT - Topps (Magic Marker) Absolutely brilliant pop. They will take over the world.
2. The Magnetic Fields - Distortion (Merge) A solid release from my all-time favorite band. The song “Drive on Driver” makes me cry.
3. The Smittens - The Coolest Thing About Love (Happy Happy Birthday to Me) Like if the Magnetic Fields made a twee pop record.
4. Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs (Atlantic) I liked this record more than I thought I would, and it provided the soundtrack for summer.
5. Afternoon Naps - Snowday (self-released) Unbelievably catchy pop from Cleveland.
6. Old 97′s - Blame It on Gravity (New West) Best Old 97′s release since Satellite Rider! I love it!
7. REM - Accelerate (Warner Bros) 2008 sure was a year for comebacks! The Mike Mills harmonies on this album kill me.
8. Your Heart Breaks - Love Is A Long Dark Road (Love Is All You Need) Beautiful masterpiece. That’s all I can say. You must hear it.
9. Chris Walla - Field Manual (Barsuk) I’d been waiting for five years for this record to finally see the light of day. It was a bit of a grower, but definitely worth the wait.
10. Cars Can Be Blue - Doubly Unbeatable (Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records) My favorite dirty pop duo from Athens, GA stepped it up and made a great poppy punky record!

In no particular order, a Top 10 list put together in 15 minutes consisting of the albums which stuck out in my mind. It was a terrific year for music, and I buckled under the pressure of putting together a Top 10. And that’s why you now have a hastily thrown together list.

• Of Montreal / Skeletal Lamping - this disk is pure joy. I heard ‘em on Sharlese’s show, then saw them do the in-studio @ kexp. Later that evening I went to the ShoDo to see them and I had the BEST time!
• Jake One / White Van Music - Excellent disk with stand out guests. Especially love tracks with Brother Ali and D. Black
• Lupe Fiasco / The Cool - I played this so much, my husband got sick of it. Lupe is truly an original!
• VA / Live @ KEXP Volume Four - They get better every year! I love the last track by Rufus Wainwright, an artist I hadn’t really listened to before vol. IV came out.
• Black Nite Crash / Array - Brilliant disk by my current fave local band
• Nick Cave / Dig! Lazarus Dig!! - Fun disk, Great show @ ShoDo
• Joseph Arthur / Temporary People
• Hercules and Love Affair / Hercules and Love Affair - Big time booty shakin’ fun!
• Gutter Twins / Saturnalia
• Telepathique / Last Night On Earth - Loved seeing them perform this disk live at Nectar.

* The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely *
Best all around album of the year! Blows away their first release, which was also fantastic. Makes me forget about that other band that Jack White is in.

* Girl Talk - Feed the Animals*
The ipod age has almost made music too available. Not enough time to listen to everything! This album takes you through decades of great music in under 45 minutes. Almost too much fun!

* MGMT - Oracular Spectacular*
This came out at the start of the year and is still hanging on. Each track has revealed itself as a new discovery through time. Can’t wait to hear more from these guys.

* The Black Keys - Attack and Release *
Always great albums from these guys, Danger Mouse helped shine a slightly different light on their talent, while retaining what makes them stand out. Another gradual album that keeps revealing more angles and never seems to drop off.

* Portishead - Third *
One of my favorite bands of all time, if only they would come out with something more than once a decade. I wondered if they would lose their enveloping, dark mood. Time only seemed to have increased this. Disturbing and depressing, I loved every minute of it!

* Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground - Self-Titled *
I was lucky enough to stumble upon their set at this year’s Capitol Hill Block Party. I instantly fell in love with their passionate combination of styles and moods. Fantastic live band and the album is just as great.

* The Secret Machines - Secret Machines*
Any worry about a drop in quality after the exit of founding guitarist Benjamin Curtis is erased immediately. There is no lacking here for great psychedelic rock. Check out “Last Believer, Drop Dead” for catchy bliss.

* The Toadies - Deliverance *
After a long hiatus, they brought back the rage of the 90s like they never left. From the blazing opening track to the final note, this one begs to be turned up loud. Also one of the best rock shows I have seen in a long time.

* She & Him - Volume 1 *
How cute can Zooey Deschanel possibly get? After being adorable on the big screen for years, with the help of M. Ward she has created a beautiful, nostalgic album of classic pop and country sound. Can’t wait for Volume 2 (and a tour that comes through Seattle would be nice, too)!

* Pavement - Brighten the Corners: Nicene Creedence Edition *
This one barely came in before the end of the year. How did I already know it was one of the best? Because it has the original 4th album by the legendary indie-rock gods, plus all the would-be classic B-sides and rarities of the era, all stuffed into two brimming CDs (if anyone still knows what those are).
