Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is “Just Another Day” by Her Space Holiday from 2008 EP Sleepy Tigers released on Mush Records.
Her Space Holiday – Just Another Day (MP3)
With a commercial jingle melody and a whispered heavy metal voice, Marc Bianchi breathes life into his electro-pop visions with the aplomb of a musician still sting himself. Under the guise Her Space Holiday, Bianchi explores the highs of bubblegum and the depths of drone from the comfort of his readymade bedroom. “Just Another Day” may seem like just another song plucked from the Her Space Holiday oeuvre, but the song’s bright sparkle from a rough brillo will forever catch your eye. The happy-go-lucky tune may mimic an Esurance advertisement with its catchy jangle and candy-coated sweetness coaxing you into short intervals of faux excitement but there’s a dark side hiding within Bianchi’s road-worn throat. Not the sort of terror that scares little children or haunts horror stories, but the brand of no-light that has seen a fair share of heartbreak and disappointment — and though Bianchi has traded in his bedroom for bigger stages and wider audiences, the reasons for crawling into his sanctuary in the first place still burst through the seams of his poppy overcoat. It may be “Just Another Day” in your neck of the woods but Marc Bianchi will do his best to give it a soundtrack unlike any other.
Currently, Her Space Holiday is on holiday — at least according to the lack of tour dates on the outfit’s MySpace page We’ll also take a break from being voyeuristic through the world wide web to focus our attention on Her Space Holiday’s visual treat, outtakes from Everyone Lookin’ Like Beyonce, a short film by Marc Bianchi:
