Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is “Nice Fox” by The Rosebuds off their 2008 album Life Like, out on Merge.
On their 2007 release, Night of the Furies, The Rosebuds tweaked their more recognizable epic acoustic sound in favor of a sharp-edged album of synth-heavy dance pop. With the demons of a storm-plagued touring season and the inadequacies of a feeble government excised, the duo of Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp have on their 2008 release, Life Like, stepped back into the ring of deeply emotional, soaringly beautiful acoustic compositions. Joined by the likes of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Portastatic’s Matthew McCaughan, and Ashley Stove’s Jim Brantley, The Rosebuds have steeped the album in the sort of darkly genuine storytelling their fans have grown accustomed to. “Nice Fox,” the tale of a collapsed barn and the fox that is crushed below, throbs with a down-home sort of choral feeling, undercut by the somber twang of Ivan’s guitar and the sad strain of a lightly played piano. It is an small, doleful tale of death writ large against a background of booming drums and intersecting voices.
The Rosebuds just finished a tour that brought them through Seattle last year, and they were sure to stop by KEXP for a live in-studio session, which you can download as one of our recent Live Performances podcasts. Right now, they’re heading down from the Northeast, where they performed this weekend, back home to NC, where they’re playing two shows this weekend. Check out their website and MySpace page for updates and their prolific blog for just plain old fun -- and where you’ll find proof that T Pain, The Rosebuds, and Lil Wayne really do go well together. They’ve also posted on their blog this fan-made video for “Change My Life” on our new Tour EP:
