Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is
My Girls by Animal Collective from the 2009 album Merriweather Post Pavilion on Domino Records.
Among the die-hard and the growing number of passive yet curious listeners, Merriweather Post Pavilion is the most anticipated record since Strawberry Jam. So on the day of it’s official release (the album leaked on December 25th), we are highlighting the album’s lead single,
My Girls, a track bound for remix fame and many a year-end list. Earlier this month, Pitchfork sought to legitimize the hype in the form of a 9.6 rating while the UKs Uncut declared the record
one of the landmark American albums of the century so far. Statistics and bold declarations aside, MPP, the 8th album under the catch-all Animal Collective moniker, serves as an amalgamation of the group’s experimental and expansive career. Following more in line with the poppier Strawberry Jam and Panda Bear’s most recent solo effort, Person Pitch, MPP also carries on the AC tradition of injecting experimental noise and shoegaze elements into melodies both tangible and ethereal. At either end of MPP lay ACs most brilliant pop constructions, and inbetween, only a couple are not immediately memorable. After a few focused listens, you’re more likely to experience a close encounter than a night’s sleep uninterrupted by any variety of the record’s catchy melodies. Whatever your view of AC and their latest album, you can keep up on all the latest news via your choice of popular social network. For those of you in NYC, catch them tonight at the Grand Ballroom and tomorrow at the Bowery. Meanwhile, this here’s an animated performance of
