KEXP Live in Austin during SXSW, Day 2: Akron/Family

photos by Jim Bennett

You may be surprised to know that Akron/Family don’t hail from Akron nor are they blood. Yet no matter the place, no matter the time, the newly minted trio of Miles Seaton, Seth Olinsky, and Dana Janssen are as closely knit as family -- and if you’ve ever caught the band live, you’ve also been adopted by Akron/Family thanks to performances that involve, engage, and encourage the audience to be a part of the show.

The band’s forthcoming disc, Set ‘em Wild, Set ‘em Free -- the group’s first for Dead Oceans -- looks to continue the Akron/Family tradition of blending music with camaraderie. The album also promises to continue the band’s musical progression, garnering comparisons with the works Fela Kuti and Ali Farka all while maintaining the communal folk sound fans have grown to adore.
