Song of the Day: Faunts – Alarmed/Lights

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is Alarmed/Lights by Faunts from the 2009 album Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. on Friendly Fire Recordings.

Faunts – Alarmed/Lights (MP3)

Faunts, the trio turned quintet out of Edmonton, Alberta, has arrived at that album everyone knew they were capable of. Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. features the band’s most accessible and instantly gratifying songwriting to date, and though they’re now talking down to the level of the average listener, none of their musical intelligence is lost. Mixing rock with ambient guitar drones and folk with electro-pop, Faunts travel huge swaths of soundspace in any given track. They don’t hit the nail on the head every time, but when they do the results are dazzling. Few bands try, much less succeed, at matching glitchy dance-rock with straight forward pop, but this record does just that time and time again. No pressure, Faunts, but the watermark is now a lot higher. The band is currently taking a break from touring, but as the weather heats up expect the tour section of their website to follow suit. From their M4 EP, here’s a video for M4 (Part II):
