Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is “No Turning Back” by Gui Boratto from his 2009 album, Take My Breath Away, available on Kompakt.
Brazilian born DJ Gui Boratto is well known in the scene for his unique blend of dreamy French tinged techno. Although some might consider his lighter style somewhat of a departure from the famous German label Kompakt’s usual fare of more traditional house-style music, Boratto’s work is undeniably heady, headphone-friendly stuff. Take My Breath Away is only his second album for Kompakt and his third overall in his five years as an artist, but Gui Boratto has been on the scene a long time. As a producer and multi-instrumentalist for the previous ten years, he worked with a wide array of artists including Pato Banton, Steel Pulse, Desiree, and… Garth Brooks. But the route he took toward Kompakt was for him the same as nearly everyone else: he sent a demo tape. Now, with reportedly hundreds of tracks ready at his disposal to unleash on dance fans in clubs, and two acclaimed albums in his short career, Gui Boratto has become a true master of his craft. Just listen for yourself on today’s Song of the Day, an easily accessible, impossible not to like song featuring vocals by his wife, Luciana Villanova.
You can ready more about Gui Boratto on his website and listen to additional tracks at his MySpace page. A relentlessly touring DJ, he has just finished Coachella and is on his way to a ton of dates in Europe. Unfortunately, you may have already missed his stop in your town.
