Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is “Medicine” by Starfucker from their 2009 album Jupiter available from Badman Recording Co.
The last time we checked in with Portland’s electro-poppers Starfucker, they had just released their self-titled debut album, which received quite a few spins by KEXP DJs (and rightly so). This week, they celebrate the release of their second (mini) album, Jupiter, which offers up eight more of their highly infectious electro pop music (including a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”). Although it was originally intended as a side project (or probably more accurately a means to goof off and make melodic noises), frontman Josh Hodges has since added three more members and has taken the band on several tours and stops at SXSW and other music festivals. They have built up quite a reputation for their live show which often includes dressing up in elaborate costumes (or going drag).
Starfucker is playing a few dates around the Wild West with fellow Portlanders Atole before heading to Seattle for the Capitol Hill Block Party on July 24th. Should be a hoot. Check out their myspace page for more information.
