I’m hosting my first international showcase in London that will kick off the Great Escape Festival in Brighton. The show is at Half Moon Pub in Herne Hill on Wednesday, May 13th. I already expect many listeners to my overnight show to attend.
FatCat artist The Balky Mule and one of my news faves, Brighton-band Peggy Sue are playing, as well as Headfall and special guests.
Ticket info here.
The Great Escape is Europe’s leading new music festival and features over 300 bands at tons of venues around Brighton during May 14-16th. I went a couple years ago and have been dying to go back. Brighton is my favorite English city (besides London) and I enjoy bouncing around from venue to venue by the seaside. It’s home to bands such as The Go! Team, Fatboy Slim, Clearlake, British Sea Power and Brakes.
This year’s lineup is even more massive than before and features known faves: the Charlatans, Gang of Four, Peter, Bjorn & John, Evan Dando, Kasabian, Datarock, Dan Auerbach, the Twilight Sad, Maps, hometown boys Brakes and British Sea Power.
My top picks so far are Bombay Bicycle Club, The Temper Trap, the Answering Machine, James Yuill and The New Wine.
At SXSW, I saw Peggy Sue, Mumford & Sons, Micachu & the Shapes, We Have Band, Dananananakroyd, Casiokids, Noah & the Whale, The Soft Pack (formerly the Muslims), Fanfarlo, the Vivian Girls, and the Strange Boys, and they’re also playing Great Escape. It is in fact where all the best up-and-coming bands escape to.
I will have a full report after the festival so please do check back. Then listen to my special Great Escape edition radio show on Tuesday, May 26th.
Yours in music, DJ Shannon
