preview by Leigh Bezezekoff

We just got a scoop that local indie folk singer/songwriter Rocky Votolato has a few songs featured on the soundtrack to the coming of age black comedy My Suicide being screened at SIFF tonight. A quick look at the SIFF short description is intriguing to say the least. The film is about a 17 year old who announces that his final school video project is to film his own suicide and the spectacle that surrounds his announcement. Apparently, the writer/director spent four years developing the story with his son and the lead actor to give it authenticity and uses the variety of mediums teens use (Youtube, Facebook etc.) which is kinda creepy but I guess thorough. It should be interesting to see how they managed to pull it off. It’s already won an award for the Best Feature Film in the Berlin International Film Festival’s youth film section.

The soundtrack features four of Votalto’s songs along with songs from Radiohead, Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket. I asked Rocky a few questions about his involvement with the film:

My Suicide features some of your music; how did you get involved in the project?

The director David Miller and the main actor in the film Gabriel Sunday (Archie) contacted me about using my music in the movie several years ago. They sent me a trailer and told me a bit about it and I thought it sounded very interesting so I agreed:)

What attracted you to the movie?

The film explores the issue of suicide and a general sense of being disenfranchised with modern western society. These are both feelings that I’ve thought about a lot and so I thought it was a perfect fit for my music.

Which of your songs are featured in the soundtrack? Did you write new songs for specifically for the film or did they use existing ones? Anything off the new album you’ve been working on?

They used four of my songs: “She Was Only in it for The Rain,” “Suicide Medicine,” “Cut Me in Two,” and one other that I can’t remember right now (sorry!). We talked about having me write some original music for the movie but unfortunately I never ended up getting around to it. Nothing from the new record is included — but the new record is almost done! Should be out early next year on Barsuk.

Also, feel free to let us know more about what you’re working on or if you have some shows in the works.

I’m playing at the Triple Door on Aug. 15th. It’s a benefit show that I’ve organized in order to help save some endangered species. Thanks for getting the word out on it!!

Rocky will be playing a special set prior to the 9:30 screening tomorrow evening at Pacific Place. He mentions on his website that he’s scheduled to go on around 9pm.
