The KEXP Kids Dance Party Turns FOUR!

… It brings a tear to my eye to see my child growing up to big and so fast.I look at him and think ‘It’s been four years already ? … Seems like ages ago … Y’all didn’t know I had a child … Well yes in a way I do … because I am the proud poppa who help bring this party into the world four years ago.. Yes it — or rather the idea of it — was conceived and presented by me to daddy John Richards four years ago (now that I think about it our baby has two daddies just like many contemporary families do) after many conversations I had with aging club goers whose parental responsibilities inhibit them from socializing and dancing like they used to.. With babysitting costs and early bedtimes and a thousand other tasks, having a dance party for parents and kids was a natural fit for KEXP and we’ve gotten such great response that we’ve had to turn away parents and kids because of the overflow.

But this year we’re having it in a bigger place, giving our kids and parents more room to move around and to grow.. Come meet other members of our family, DJ’s Kid Hops and Darek Mazzone, who now have lovely children of their own. Maybe you do too. Our dance masters The Massive Monkees are still the finest bunch of breakers in all the land and kids love em. And KEXP parents are the gosh darndest good looking bunch of parents around ( …and some are single and available too… I’m just sayin).. So if you’ve never been to one of these i can guarantee you and yours will have a blast… meetin and greetin, dancin and prancin. I always do. Come on down and join our party and meet our families. I’ll see you and yours this Sunday..

The 4th Annual Kids Dance Party is this Fathers Day, June 21st, featuring KEXP DJ’s Darek Mazzone, Kid Hops and Riz, plus a ton of fun games, activities, face painting, crafts, break dancing lessons by Massive Monkees, cupcakes and more!

Oh man! I’m so excited for this party! Last year was so much fun, and we’ve got even more room for the kids to dance around and spaz out this year – it’s going to be wicked!

Is it weird that of the 200+ bookings I DJ a year, I always really look forward to this one? This party is so much fun, and it truly brings out the kid in all of us.

I’ve been thinking about the tunes I’ll bring for weeks, and keeping notes on a few different notepads – trust me, this is very atypical of me. But, that’s the beauty of this party: among other things, it’s an excuse for Riz, Darek and me to dig deep into our music collections for the tunes that are just straight-up fun for kids of all ages. Music from any place and any era all has a home on this dancefloor, as long as it’s a great soundtrack for bouncing around, eating cupcakes, and doing the robot with the Massive Monkees.

Tonight I put the final touches on my selection for Sunday afternoon’s party. And I set those tunes aside – they’re all set to go. I can’t wait to share them with you and your kid(s) on Sunday!

See ya at Showbox SoDo on Sunday!
