KEXP Documentaries: The New World – One Giant Leap

Greetings, Michele Myers here… producer of KEXP Documentaries. We just finished our series The New World with a profile on two studio musicians who want to change the world. They call themselves One Giant Leap.

One Giant Leap is a project led by two guys from the UK. Duncan Bridgeman and Jamie Catto travel the world with their laptop and record different artists in different countries and create songs by layering those recordings. They start off with backing tracks that they compose at home, then shoot off to every continent to record with musicians, famous public figures and everyday folks. They ask their subjects to talk about love, death, hunger, poverty, religion and find that the answers from culture to culture feel the same… Painting a picture of the world as one mad, dysfunctional family.

For their new record, What About Me?, the duo visited over 50 countries and recorded over 200 artists. They took a film crew with them too, and created a TV series/DVD of the recordings. The TV series plays out like a music video, but its themes are deeper. Guests on What About Me include Michael Stipe, Jhelisa, Michael Franti, Noam Chomsky, Daniel Lanois, Zap Mama and more.
