Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is “No Escape” by Rubik from the group’s 2009 album, Hometowns, on Paper Tiger AV.
Finnish pop troupe Rubik released their sophomore album Dada Bandits on April 1st of this year. No fooling here, folks: it’s a happy, posi-core effort that really shines through with the singled “No Escape”. “No Escape” has everything you’d expect to find in a Scandinavian pop act’s sonic arsenal. An open-and-closed hi-hat and snare rhythm, synthesizers that sound like kazoos, and lyrics that have that certain charm you only get when English is your second or third language. Earnest and honest, the vocals take turns between controlled declarations and manic Arcade Fire inspired yelps.
This coming Saturday, August 15, Rubik will take part at the Flow Festival in Helsinki alongside Lily Allen, Vampire Weekend and Final Fantasy. Hopefully, the’ll make it Stateside sometime soon. Check the band’s MySpace page for updates. Until then, enjoy this video for “Wasteland” also from Dada Bandits:
