Review Revue: Helmet – Strap It On

I know we’ve already covered Helmet in this space, but I think these rock-purveyors are more than eligible for multiple album attention. Besides, Strap it on is one of those albums that helped get me through my teenage years. Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one loving its thick, bludgeoning layers of guitars.

“KCMU welcomes to the OK Hotel on Wed, 3/6/91 w/Cop Shoot Cop & Seaweed. ALL AGES!” [Man, there is so much awesomeness and history contained in those two sentences.]

“Fairly harsh but not quite as harsh as lots of other bands on [Amphetamine Reptile]. On a 1-5, I give it a 3.”

“I once saw a band called the ‘Strap-Ons’ play with the Hard Ons and Lime Spiders, which has nothing to do with this ‘cept they are both good.”

“And the Hard Ons played with the Wet Ones…”

“Black Sab homage.”

“To me that’s a compliment. To you? I guess not…”

“Yo man! I’m back to back with this one & the Dust Devils — long [illegible] Noise.”

“Wow — ‘Black top’ is awesomely heavy. Great groove!”

“That’s what I was going to say.”

“Dave Ehrich [?] — check this out (features a former member of Band of Susans, Page) — & it ROCKS!”

“I like #4 a lot, too. Wish 2-3 wasn’t a red dot — it’s really cool.”

“They were incredibly tight live and much better. They look only about 19.”
