During this past weekend, KEXP broadcast from the Bumbershoot 2009 Music Lounge, with exclusive and intimate live performances from 14 bands over three days, including The Cave Singers, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, Common Market, Metric, and the legendary Brazilian psych rock band Os Mutantes, who performed for the very first time in Seattle. Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be featuring video from these sessions on the KEXP Blog.
First up is one of the highlights for many people at the Music Lounge and at Bumbershoot in general: Raphael Saadiq. The Grammy-nominated artist, formerly of Tony! Toni! TonĂ©!, does old school soul like you wish it would always be today, recalling the icons of the 60′s and 70′s like Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Delfonics and many others. He and his 8-piece band arrived, all decked out in sharp black suits, all but female vocalist Erika Jerry in a stunning red dress — for a radio performance no less! Here are a few songs from their set:

I was there and it was AMAZING! His show later that evening was great as well, they even graced us with a few encores! GREAT, the best preformer at Bumbershoot by far! Thanks KEXP for having him!!
easily the best performance of the day! i was blown away.
This is such a tease! Just cut up the whole concert – and the encore – and post it! He’s unreal (and I love hearing myself shout “Saaaaaaaaaaaaaadiq!”)
More vids coming up, but we’re limited to 10 minutes per clip, so you’ll have to take your Saadiq in smaller doses!
Raphael Saadiq is the best sound of funk and soul I have heard on KEXP.
Agreed. It seems effortless.
An amazing performer, for sure. I saw him once with Lucy Pearl and he had this Bootsy Collins schtick going on at the time — big boots, bright clothes and even a feather boa. His guitar skills were exceptional! What a great talent. Love the extended cuts at the fest.
he offered to sell me his shoes for $7… too bad they didn’t fit! =)
