Yet another New York band with a unique sound to fall in love with, Cymbals Eat Guitars isn’t exactly what you might expect given the name. We recently saw these guys playing at the KEXP BBQ where they put on a great show and surprised us with their young talent (surprise: 2 are in their 20’s, 2 are in their 30’s!). The bands debut release “Why There Are Mountains” definitely got some heads turning despite being a completely self-released album. In fact, it just may be the DIY attitude that has helped the band achieve the level of success they have. Lead singer/songwriter Joseph D’Agostino is definitely the driving force and focal point behind the band, his voice immediately recognizable and distinctive; just like any good Indie Crooner. Deftly switching from a gentle melody to a near yell, he sounds best when he’s getting a little loud. Add some keys, guitars, and drums and you have the makings for a very good band. File under early Modest Mouse or Built To Spill.
Unfortunately, the band had to cancel their Seattle appearance last night due to one of the members getting food poisoning, and poor Joe had to go it alone on stage today. The full band will perform tonight, though. They are currently touring with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and are just starting on a lengthy tour with some European dates. You can listen to the band and find out about upcoming shows on their MySpace page. You can also find them on twitter @CEGWTAM.
