Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is “Psychic City (Voodoo City),” by YACHT from their 2009 album See Mystery Lights on DFA Records.
Jona Bechtolt and Claire Evans are largely responsible for the pop explosions known as YACHT -- and if you neglect typing the name in all caps, you will be penalized for your lack of joining in on the fun. That’s the point of Jona and Claire’s music: good times that never seem to end. Pretense is gone, openness is embraced, and quirkiness is encouraged.
If this happens to be your first meeting with YACHT, don’t expect heaping loads of Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins battling Daryl Hall and John Oates, and though that would be a whole brand of fun in and of itself, Jona and Claire’s tongue-in-cheek 80s dance party is far more energetic, and ideal for burning excess caloric intake before the holiday eating season dares to claim your wasteline. “Psychic City (Voodoo City)” will make many older listeners reminisce about Oingo Boingo, Yaz, and Wang Chung. YACHT is good ol’ fashioned pop with all the best parts of the swine; it’s bacon, not hot dogs. You’ll find yourself clapping along from beat one and before you’re aware, you’ll be tapping your toes, followed by wiggling your hips, and then your whole body will just unconsciously lose control. Throw on some pastels and knee-highs and join in on the fun because something this unbridled only comes along once in a great while.
YACHT will be pulling up anchor and setting sail for global ports of call for most of the year and from the dates listed on their MySpace page, Seattle isn’t in the cards at the moment (they were here just over a month ago), but if you find yourself in Europe, Asia, Australia, or California in the coming months, you may have a chance to catch the YACHT fun. New Yorkers and anyone heading out to CMJ this year should check out the KEXP-sponsored DFA party with YACHT, James Murphy, and Holy Ghost at the Brooklyn Bowl on October 22. Until then, enjoy the official video for “Psychic City (Voodoo City)”:
