Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is “Last Dance” by The Raveonettes from their 2009 album In & Out of Control on Vice Records.
When you think of dreamy band locales, Denmark might not be the first place that comes to mind. It does happen to be the starting ground for a great male-female Danish duo The Raveonettes are actually Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo, who now live in New York and Los Angeles. No strangers to the big spotlight, the band has been through a lot together since forming in 2001, including stints on major labels and appearances on National TV. Although most would label them on the poppier side of the spectrum, they are still 100% Rock ‘N’ Roll. Today’s Song of the Day, “Last Dance,” seems like a happy enough song until you suddenly realize it’s about how drug addiction interferes with love. Fans of Jesus & Mary Chain look no further.
The band is currently on tour and scheduled to play in Seattle @ Neumo’s on 11/6. Until then, you can find out more about the band on their website or listen to additional songs on their MySpace page. You can also follow them on Twitter @ theraveonettes, where they have actively engaged with their fans for the new album by offering videos and demos from their studio sessions and opportunities to live chat with the band. Just last week, The Raveonettes were live on KEXP from the Cutting Room Studios in NYC. Check back on the KEXP Blog for photos. Until then, enjoy the brand new video for “Last Dance”:
