There’s a reason festivals like CMJ Music Marathon exist: it’s one of the few times that bands from across the world, in a variety of styles, genres and localities can showcase their young, upcoming bands for American audiences. For some bands -- even local ones -- it’s their first exposure to the important tastemakers, whether they be critics, bloggers, magazines or radio stations. And each year KEXP broadcasts from CMJ in order to tap into the diverse talent. This year was no exception as we hosted 15 in-studio sessions at the Cutting Room Studios, NYC, with eager young bands like Choir of Young Believers, Rubik, The xx, Chief, Deastro, The Union Line, The Temper Trap, The Blakes, and a lot more.
You’ve seen a few videos of the sessions already, but here are a few more that show some of that range: from the danceable electro-rock of New York’s Phantogram to country blues of Seattle’s Moondoggies to the fuzzed out pop of New Zealand group Surf City:
