Every Monday through Friday. we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Swim” by Surfer Blood from their forthcoming album Astro Coast on Kanine Records.
Surfer Blood are one of those bands that caught us all by surprise. If you’ve spent anytime listening to the station recently, you’ll know we’re also big fans of this young band! For those familiar with the ever popular retro-beach pop movement, this quirky 5-piece from South Florida gives the genre to a whole new twist. Taking familiar sound cues from bands like the Pixies and Vampire Weekend (think punchy rock with a bit of afro-pop), they have some of that same “world music but still accessible” sound of those other bands, which hardly a bad thing when you consider they could easily be penned as one of the best new bands of the year. Even though the Song of the Day, “Swim,” talks about reaching an eventual end, it’s also the perfect place to start your discovery of this great new band. What else was bigger in 2009 than Surfer Blood?
The band is currently on tour and just recently played in Seattle where they opened for the Japandroids. You can listen to additional tracks from the band on their MySpace page or check out their website. Here they are performing today’s Song of the Day during their recent in-studio:
