Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Battles On” by The Ghost Is Dancing from the 2009 album Battles On on Sonic Unyon.
The Ghost Is Dancing reportedly formed after college friends Kevin Corlis, Jim DeLuca, Jamie Matechuk and Odie Ouderkirk attended a Hidden Cameras show in their hometown of Toronto. Flash forward a few years later and the band has already been on a national tour, recorded an album and an EP, and even survived some roster downsizing, yet they come away relatively unscathed. Their new album, Battles On, couldn’t be more appropriately titled. Working with producer Chris Stringer, the group downsizes their sound just a bit as well, leaning away from the previous Arcade Fire references but still maintaining a blend of orchestral pop and indie rock. Horns proliferate on one song, while guitars and keyboards dominate the next. This is one of those unnoticed albums that may sneak past you at first, but you’ll know you’ve hit pay dirt after catching a few great hooks — and this album has plenty of them. While The Hidden Cameras are currently traveling a darker road on their own latest release, The Ghost Is Dancing continue to uphold the upbeat exuberance their mentors inspired in them.
The Ghost Is Dancing are not currently on tour but you can read more about the band on their website or listen to additional songs on their MySpace page. You can even reach the band on twitter here. While we wait for them to re-cross the border on another tour, enjoy this new video for “This Thunder,” another track on the new album:
