Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show Host Kevin Cole, is “We Want It! We Want It!” by BOAT from their album Setting the Paces available from Portland-based Magic Marker Records.
Whether or not you condone the excessive use of exclamation marks, these well-placed pieces of punctuation let you know you’re in for a treat with today’s song “We Want It! We Want It!” This song was originally written for a side project with frontman David “D.” Crane and his wife which never materialized (much owing to the fact that D. pilfered it for BOAT). For those familiar with this quirky Seattle band, their latest effort Setting the Paces features 14 tracks chock full of your favorite things: falsetto choruses, hand claps, and just generally energetic and entertaining tunes. Many fans and critics alike are claiming this to be their best effort yet due in part to the addition of a fourth permanent member in the form of Jackson “J.” Long in the role of drummer and co-producer. Also for the first time, you can pick up the album on vinyl (and get free downloads of the tracks if you send them a picture of you with the LP!). The album art ties in nicely with lyrics from “We Want It! We Want It!” and is again provided by D. (also a local art teacher) who also provided the hand drawn baseball cards and chalky bubble gum you got with last year’s Major League themed album, Tops.
You can catch BOAT tonight as part of their Holiday Spectacular at the Sunset Tavern. The Exploding High Fives and Concours d’Elegance are also on the bill and the evening is hosted by Lebeau of music/comedy duo Peacock & Lebeau. For more info and future shows (including Grudge Rock at The Croc next month) check out their MySpace page or their website. For right now, here’s a live performance of today’s song:
