This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today‚Äôs selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Trippin’ at the Disco” by People Under the Stairs from the 2009 album Carried Away on OM Records.

People Under the Stairs - Trippin’ at the Disco (MP3)

Every year or two, People Under the Stairs creep out and drop a bomb straight out of Los Angeles. This time it’s Carried Away with the duo once again appearing on OM Records. Equal parts MC/producer Thes One and MC Double K, People Under the Stairs channel everything you loved about nineties hip-hop and bring it up to speed with the aughties.

On the track “Trippin’ at the Disco,” orchestral samples abound as a half-step beat drives along with the slickest bass groove you’ll hear this year. Nothing sounds out of place as all the elements of this track work together to present the MCs in their finest form. Both Thes One and Double K represent with verses sure to make you crack a smile once and nod your head continually as everything about this track screams PARTY BANGER.

People Under the Stairs hit the road on an East Coast tour starting January 21st at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA. They have continuing dates in Providence, NYC, D.C., and Chicago, but make sure to check out their MySpace page to get all tour dates and details. This is one act you do not want to miss if you’re fiending for an all out party. Don’t believe me? Check out the video for “Trippin’ at the Disco” below:
