Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Each and every Friday we deliver songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “When I’m With You” by Best Coast from their current single on Black Iris.
Anyone who ever went to college across the country from their home knows what it’s like to long for familiar grounds. The kids from Montana miss putting out forest fires and the ones from Ohio miss having a state that they could spell out with just four people. Then there is the never ending stream of wayward travelers in NYC for the semester who just don’t know what to do with themselves without the beaches, the laid back attitude, and the legalized marijuana. Bethany Cosentino took matters into her own hands by channeling all of that energy into the nearly eponymous Best Coast, her blissed-out, lo-fi guitar rock duet with Bobb Bruno.
After putting out a small handful of singles and EPs throughout 2009, Best Coast emerged in the twilight of the year with a new seven inch single on Black Iris titled “When I’m With You”. Drawing equally from All Girl Summer Fun Band and Deborah Harry and relying on a simple lyrical style that says it all without saying everything, “When I’m With You” kicks into high gear after Cosentino’s whimsical introduction. After three minutes are over all you really want to do is play it again and practice filling in the coordinate harmonies on the backing vocals and dig your toes in the sand.
Here at KEXP, we try to stay impartial regarding which coast might be the best. I don’t want to imply that our ringing endorsement of Cosentino’s beach fuzz pop means that we agree with all of her sentiments, but man I wish it was July at Golden Gardens right now. You can keep up with all of Best Coast’s news on Bethany’s blog as well as the band’s Myspace page. If you happen to reside on the band’s coast of choice then you can look forward to an expansive tour that starts in L.A. and coasts through Seattle on February 13th where the band will play The High Dive with Vivian Girls.
